HENRYVILLE, Ind. - Authorities in southern Indiana are investigating what they believe to be the accidental death of an 18-month-old boy.

The body of Aiden Maples was found Wednesday on a gravel driveway. He had been playing outside with siblings and cousins before his death.

Investigators initially weren’t sure what caused the boy's death. His mother first thought he had been the victim of a dog attack, then thought maybe he had fallen down the driveway.

The boy's injuries were not consistent with those theories. An autopsy found that the boy was hit by a car, WHAS-TV reported

Investigators believe a relative unknowingly struck the child while another child was being picked up, though no one saw what happened.

Neighbors said the family is devastated and that they agree that Maples' death was an accident.

The case will be turned over to the Clark County prosecutor's office. They will determine if any charges will be filed.
