INDIANAPOLIS -- Three people -- including a 12-year-old girl -- are dead after a two-car crash on Indianapolis' south side.

The crash happened just before midnight Wednesday in the 4500 block of East Street, near I-465.

Police say a Mustang was racing another a Corvette when the driver lost control, the car jumped the median and hit a Chevy TrailBlazer head-on.

All three people in the SUV were killed -- a man, a woman and a 12-year-old girl.

Police identified the driver of the Trailblazer Thursday night as 59-year-old Rogelia Legorreta. The other victims had yet to be identified.

The four people in the Mustang were taken to various hospitals. Two remain in the hospital, one is in serious condition.

Authorities say there were two 20-year-old men, a 20-year old woman and a 10-year-old girl in the car.

"The kiddo was expecting a good Christmas and to be involved in this type of tragedy is heartbreaking and could have easily been prevented," IMPD Officer Chris Wilburn said.

Shawn Kirkpatrick and Nick Zimmerman were right behind the Mustang moments before the fatal crash.

"They were going around the speed limit and then that's when we saw the Mustang and actually heard it. We could hear the exhaust of it and then we knew, he started probably picking it up to around 75 and then he lost control," Kirkpatrick said.
