PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. - The families of two Indiana teens critically injured while parasailing in Florida said they're appreciative of the support they've received from the community.
Sidney Renea Good of Roanoake , Ind., and Alexis Fairchild of Huntington, Ind., both 17-year-olds, were parasailing near Panama City Beach Monday when a line attached to the boat broke and they crashed into a building, power line and parked car, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
Witnesses told The News Herald (http://goo.gl/RNvB2) that strong winds caught the detached parasail and tossed the teenagers around the beach after the line broke.
Vacationers Cole Adair and Michael Kennedy, both from Georgia, told the newspaper that they tried to help after the parasail smashed into a SUV on the ground.
"It was gruesome," Kennedy said.
Kennedy and Adair said both victims went limp after crashing into the side of The Commodore Condominiums and stayed that way for several seconds before they reached the ground.
"It seemed like a long time," Adair said.
Tourist Amy Barron said she saw the women hit either a power line or a utility pole before they crashed in the parking lot.
"We knew they were going to hit, but there was nothing we could do about it," Barron said.
FWC spokeswoman Karen Parker said investigators are looking into the possibility of an equipment failure. She said the investigation could be lengthy.
Friends held a prayer vigil Tuesday night to offer support for the 17-year-olds and their families.
"(With) their personalities, they could seriously bring anybody up who was down. They always helped me when I was in a bad mood or anything. They were always there to make me feel better. Alexis would go out of her way to make anybody smile even if she was having a bad day. They were just really good people," said friend Kayla Jojola.
The girls' families said they appreciated the public's thoughts and prayers, RTV6 confirmed.
"Our daughters, Alexis Fairchild and Sidney Good, were in an accident on Panama City Beach on July 1 and are currently both in critical condition at Bay Medical Center. We are very grateful for the love and support that we’ve received from family and friends at home as well as many people here in Panama City who have assisted us. We ask for privacy at this time as we focus on Alexis and Sidney. Thank you for respecting our wishes and for your concern for our daughters. We truly appreciate your thoughts and prayers." – Statement from the Good and Fairchild Families
