INDIANAPOLIS -- Two branches of the Indianapolis Public Library have been named to the National Register of Historic Places.
East Washington and Spades Park are original Carnegie libraries.
The East Washington Branch, 2822 E. Washington St., was the first in Indianapolis to be built with funds from a $120,000 grant by the Andrew Carnegie Foundation.
Construction began in 1909 with the dedication on November 14, 1911.
The library is currently undergoing its first major expansion and renovation since it opened.
The Spades Park Branch, 1801 Nowland Ave., was built in 1912.
The branch had a major renovation in 1987.
The National Register is the federal government's official list of prehistoric and historic properties worthy of preservation and protection.
