COLUMBUS, Ind. - Two people were killed in a crash Friday evening on State Road 46 in Bartholomew County.

The crash happened about 8 p.m. near the intersection of 46 and County Road 1000 East, in the eastern part of the county.

The Bartholomew County Sheriff's Department said the driver of an eastbound van, Danielle Catron, 21, of Greensburg, veered into the path of the car driven by Ann Schwartze, 27, of Hope, for an unknown reason.

"It appears that the van ... went left of center and possibly went into a slide," said Chief Deputy Todd Noblitt. "Ms. Schwartze was unable to avoid striking the van."

When deputies arrived, they found that the van had burst into flames. Catron and a passenger, Jeffery Washburn, 22, of Greensburg, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Schwartze was taken to Columbus Regional Hospital. Information about her condition wasn't immediately released.

"Several people who drove upon the scene shortly after the accident exhibited heroic efforts by calling 911, attempting to extinguish the flames and assisting Ms. Schwartze from her vehicle," Noblitt said. "They provided aid to Ms. Schwartze until emergency personnel arrived."

Police said the road was wet and slick at the time of the crash and that they believe that may have been a factor.
