INDIANAPOLIS - Two construction workers were struck and killed on Interstate 69 southbound near 82nd and 96th streets during rush hour Friday morning.
The incident was reported just before 6 a.m. when a pickup truck crashed into a work zone, striking two people.
Indiana State Police said the construction workers were with Reith Riely Construction Company contracted by the Indiana Department of Transportation. Both workers were wrapping up their overnight shift.
Investigators said the crash happened when the workers were removing cones from the southbound, left-lane of I-69. A southbound pickup truck driven by Jordan Stafford, 22, of Fortville, continued in the left lane before crashing into an arrow board and the two workers.
The construction workers were identified as Kenneth Duerson Jr., 49, of Indianapolis, and Coty Demoss, 24, of Noblesville. They were both pronounced dead at the scene.
Stafford was rushed to IU Methodist Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
"We are saddened to learn two road workers were killed in a work zone on I-69. Please move over, slow down & allow crews to work safely," INDOT officials tweeted.
Gov. Mike Pence says the deaths of two highway construction workers is a tragic reminder of how important it is for motorists to slow down in highway work zones.
Pence said Friday in a statement that he extends his "sincere condolences" to the families of the victims.
The governor says Friday's deaths are the first involving an Indiana Department of Transportation worker or contractor since 2012.
Alcohol was not believed to be a contributing factor in the crash, but toxicology reports were said to be under investigation.
The Marion County Prosecutors Office could review the incident for possible charges pending the outcome of the investigation.
