HOOKS, Texas - Investigators say three people from Indiana have been killed and several others were hurt in a pickup truck rollover accident on Interstate 30 in Northeast Texas.
The Texas Department of Public Safety says the wreck happened around dawn Monday on eastbound I-30 in Bowie County near Hooks.
DPS officials told KSLA-TV that seven people, a family of six and a friend, were in the vehicle at the time of the accident. Relatives said they had been on a trip visiting family members in Mexico.
DPS says three people were dead at the scene. Three others were injured and transported to hospitals.
The victims were later identified as Belen Morales, 44, Jesus Ochoa, 49, and 12-year-old Isaac Ochoa-Morales.
Ochoa-Morales was a student at Rhoades Elementary School in Wayne Township, Mary Lang, spokeswoman for the Wayne Township schools, confirmed.
He was set to start middle school as a seventh grader at Lynhurst Center. Teachers said they will remember him as a standout student.
Family members said Ochoa-Morales' 17-year-old brother was driving at the time of the crash. He said he felt terrible and that the accident was his fault. He acknowledged that he fell asleep.
A family friend and two daughters, a 20-year-old and a 6-year-old, were injured and taken to the hospital. All three victims were released Wednesday.
A 24-year-old sibling, who was not with the family, will take over the responsibility of raising his younger siblings.
Investigators said the truck was traveling back from Mexico to Indiana.
