INDIANAPOLIS - Three people were seriously injured when a train and van collided Saturday morning.

The crash happened on the city's west side near the intersection of Lynhurst Drive and Bertha Street, just south of Rockville Road.

Investigators said the westbound train hit the van on the passenger side.

A spokesperson for the Wayne Township Fire Department said it appears the crossing arms were down when the van crossed the tracks.

One of the three victims had to be cut out of the van using special equipment.

The three victims were taken to Wishard Memorial Hospital in serious condition.

"Even though it is a very serious accident, quite a spectacular accident, it could have been a lot worse. Very rarely do people survive the impact of a train," said Lt. Troy Wymer, with the Wayne Township Fire Department.
