PLAINFIELD, Ind. - Thirty-two people were sent to area hospitals suffering from upper respiratory issues after they were exposed to spilled red pepper at an Amazon.com distribution center, officials said.

Plainfield Fire Department Assistant Chief Brett Anderson said the red pepper had spilled from a previous shipment inside an arriving tractor-trailer.

When employees went inside the facility at 715 Airtech Pkwy., they were unknowingly exposed to the pepper, Anderson said.

None of the injuries were serious, and none of the patients were admitted.

Shift workers were sent home because of all the emergency vehicle traffic in the area. The warehouse will reopen with the 3:30 p.m. shift.
