INDIANAPOLIS - A man was killed Sunday morning when he crashed an SUV into a utility pole on Indianapolis' east side.

Police were called to the 900 block of East Michigan Street about 8 a.m.

Officers said they found a green Ford Explorer that had struck a pole and an unresponsive driver inside.

The Indianapolis Fire Department pulled the driver, later identified as James Radford Jr., 38, of Indianapolis, from the SUV.

"EMS crews arrived and transported the driver to Wishard Memorial Hospital in critical condition," said Indianapolis police public information officer Kendale Adams. "He was later pronounced deceased."

Investigators said they believe Radford was driving at high speed westbound on Michigan Street when he lost control and struck the pole on the passenger side.

There were no signs of drug or alcohol use, police said.
