Cause of fire under investigation

INDIANAPOLIS -

Six people were hospitalized and two dogs were killed in an overnight house fire on the city's west side, Indianapolis Fire Department officials said.

The blaze broke out just after 1:30 a.m. Wednesday at a home in the 1200 block of West 36th Street near Martin Luther King Drive.

Firefighters battled the blaze for nearly 40 minutes before gaining control.

Two adults and four children, ages 2, 10, 12 and 15, were able to escape the burning home. All six family members suffered smoke inhalation. The parents were taken to Wishard Memorial Hospital and the children were taken to Riley Hospital for Children, all in stable condition, IFD officials said.

The family's two dogs were not able to escape the fire.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation.
