INDIANAPOLIS – Here are 6 things to think about to best protect yourself in case of a home break-in:

1. Have a plan: Authorities recommend your family and neighbors speak on the possible situation of a home break-in as you would if a fire or tornado occurred.
2. Escape your home: Those inside should know how to quickly get out of the home by using various escape routes planned ahead of time.
3. Keep your cellphone and keys nearby: Be sure to have 911 programmed into your phone as a quick dialing option. The panic alarm on your keys should also be pressed immediately, which can alert neighbors and possibly scare the intruder.
4. Hide in a secure room: If you can’t get out of your home, hide in a room with a door lock and call 911.
5. Don’t look for the intruder: Police said it could be more dangerous than helpful – especially if they hear you coming and decide to hide from you.
6. Never stop thinking: Security experts suggest waiting for the right time to act if you come face-to-face with the intruder.
