Board delays action on N. Indiana abortion doctor

INDIANAPOLIS - The Indiana Medical Licensing Board has delayed action against a doctor performing abortions in Gary and South Bend until the state Attorney General's office completes an investigation of him.

The licensing board called the hearing Wednesday over Dr. Ulrich Klopfer not filing timely abortion reports on girls under 14. State law requires such reports within three days.

Anti-abortion activists requested the attorney general investigate the allegations.

Klopfer said he hasn't broken any laws, but didn't comment further.

The South Bend Tribune and The (Fort Wayne) Journal Gazette report Klopfer faces a misdemeanor charge in Lake County for allegedly not filing a timely report in connection with a 13-year-old rape victim.

Klopfer lost abortion privileges in Fort Wayne at the start of the year because a required backup doctor severed ties.
