IMPD: Patient did not die as result of crash

INDIANAPOLIS - Officials said a patient in cardiac arrested died after a two-vehicle crash involving an ambulance on Thursday afternoon.

The crash happened near 11th Street and Senate Avenue around 4:15 p.m., officials with the Wayne Township Fire Department said.

Authorities say a Wayne Township ambulance with the patient onboard was en route to Methodist Hospital. Officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said the ambulance had its lights and sirens on.

Police said a driver of an SUV was not aware of the ambulance and the two vehicles collided at the intersection.

Wayne Township authorities said the patient was taken to Methodist but did not survive. IMPD officials said the patient did not die as a result of the accident.

Two firefighters, one medic and one EMT were injured, but none of the injuries appeared to be serious, Wayne Township officials said. They were all taken to Methodist.

There was no word yet if the driver of the SUV will face charges.
