INDIANAPOLIS -- American Senior Communities is the latest in a string of local companies to fall victim to a scam involving employee W-2 forms.
A spokesperson says scammers posing as a high-level ASC executive requested copies of employee W-2s via email and the company's payroll processor provided the information.
ASC didn't know about the problem until Feb. 17 when employees said that their tax returns were rejected because someone else had already filed on their behalf. The company began notifying employees of the issue as soon as they found out about it.
The company is setting up a toll-free number to answer questions.
ASC will also provide free credit monitoring and reporting services, as well as assistance with tax filing concerns, to all current and affected former employees at the company's cost.
Staffof Scotty's Brewhouse became victims of a similar scam in late January, and Monarch Beverage workers were hit at the beginning of February.
The IRS issued an alert last March about a phishing email scheme involving W-2s that claims to be from company executives and requests personal information on employees.
