MADISON CO., Ind. -- Phillip Washington, head boys basketball coach at Anderson High School, was arrested for drunk driving Saturday morning, according to Madison Co. jail records.

He was charged with misdemeanor OWI and bonded out of jail.

The assistant superintendent for Anderson Community Schools says Washington was immediately placed on administrative leave, which means he'll be suspended from teaching and coaching duties.

Washington served as boys' basketball coach at three Indiana schools: Anderson High School (2009), Highland Junior High School (2011), Crispus Attucks High School (2012-2016), and Anderson High School (2016).

In January 2016, while serving as the boys’ basketball coach at Crispus Attucks, dozens of students protested after Washington was suspended due to an IHSAA investigation involving student eligibility.

Washington was suspended by Indianapolis Public Schools for the remainder of the year and reassigned to teach at Arlington High School.

He later found himself back at Anderson High School in April 2016.

Anderson community members Tweeted their excitement to have Washington back at the school as they were looking to improve their athletics program.
