The day of Smith's funeral, Chase Stigall, who played for Butler from 2008-2013, signed up for Be The Match, testing himself with a simple cheek swab.
Everyone who signs up has a 1/430 chance to be a match for someone across the country. This week, Stigall got the call.
An unnamed baby boy needs his bone marrow to live. Stigall is now going through the process to donate.
Butler has also partnered with Be The Match since Smith's death. It is hoping to get 19,000 people to sign up and save dozens of lives.
