INDIANAPOLIS -- A man was arrested in connection with the death of Tre Spencer, who was killed in Broad Ripple in early October.

Indianapolis police arrested Marcus Barnes, 23, on Wednesday at 921 Hardin Blvd. US Marshals assisted in the arrest.

The shooting happened just before 3 a.m., in an alley near LAVA Hookah Lounge near the intersection of Guilford and Broad Ripple avenues on Oct. 3.

The two men shot, ages 23 and 22, were taken to Methodist Hospital where the 23-year-old died. Shaquille Potts, 22, was listed in serious condition.

Homicide detectives believe the shooting was the root of a long brewing feud between multiple people.

Police said the two victims were running from someone. At the time of the shooting, the nearby Casba nightclub was beginning to close down, so there was a crowd of people outside.

Barnes was preliminarily charged with murder and battery with a deadly weapon.

Toni Wheatley, Spencer’s aunt said she cried and screamed this morning when she heard of the arrest.

“I believe this is the start of another journey. Prayerfully we are people that believe in God,” she said. “We know this battle is not something we have to fight, God will fight it for us, but we are prepared to do whatever it takes to make sure whomever and all those involved in Tre’s murder will be brought to justice."

Wheatley said she will be at all court hearings.

Police say there's no known threat to anybody's safety, despite the shooting happening in such a popular part of the city.

Monday's shooting happened about a block away from where seven people were shot in 2014.
