INDIANAPOLIS -- For one northeast side neighborhood, the motto is: "Never say never."

After nearly a decade of rejection and seemingly insurmountable challenges, the Avondale-Meadows Neighborhoods has overcome the odds. For the first time in 20 years, the area will get a major grocery store, retail shops – and the jobs that come with them.

For years, the area had been officially certified as a food desert, meaning that there are more than 500 people – one one-third of the neighborhood census tract – who live more than one mile from a major grocery store.

The most recent additions to the 38th Street corridor east of Keystone Avenue have been the $18 million Eskenazi Health Center and a YMCA.

On Thursday, community leaders broke ground on a new Sav-A-Lot grocery store, a Goodwill store and more than 12,000-square-feet of retail space. The developments are expected to create 20 full-time and 50 part-time jobs.
