GREENWOOD, Ind. - A man attempting to rob a Greenwood bank changed his mind in the middle of it and told the teller to alert police.
Steven Thau, 55, of Camby was arrested at the Chase bank at 1225 South Park Dr. Wednesday morning shortly after deciding to call off the robbery.
Police said Thau gave the teller a deposit slip that said, "Give me the money, I have a gun," though he was not actually armed.
Thau told police that he's been "down on his luck," having just lost his job, wife and house, and he's been sleeping in his car in a Denny's parking lot.
Thau said he got up the nerve to rob the bank Wednesday morning, but after giving the teller his note and seeing her shaking and crying, he felt guilty, police said.
Thau told the teller that he wouldn't hurt anyone and that she could go ahead and hit the panic button then he waited for police to arrive.
Thau let everyone safely leave the building before surrendering himself to police.
Thau is being held in the Johnson County Jail on a felony robbery charge.
Police said Thau's only previous conviction was for a 2006 OWI.
