BEECH GROVE, Ind. – A series of food deserts could spring up around Indy if Marsh supermarkets close, and communities like Beech Grove may see themselves in similar situations.

Beech Grove Mayor Dennis Buckley said the closing of the city’s supermarket could cause major problems.

Marsh filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in mid-May and the chain plans to close its remaining 44 stores unless it finds a buyer.

“That would be considered a food desert, there's nowhere to go to get food, they're going to have to rely on transportation,” said Buckley. “Most of these people live in the general area of the store, that causes a problem.”

The next closest store similar to Marsh on Albany Street is Walmart – about 2 miles away. Buckley said if Marsh stores close, he wants to find a replacement store.

“We're reaching out to a couple of well-known competitors who might be interested in that store,” he said.

Despite the signs posted on the front of the store indicating there are no plans to close, neighbors said they are still concerned.

Cindy Davidson, who has lived in Beech Grove for 34 years, said the store has been convenient for her.

“Whether it's 90 degrees out, or two feet of snow, or you can't get anywhere but there, you can always walk across the street,” she said.

Marsh representatives said they have been talking with several parties interested in possibly purchasing the company.
