INDIANAPOLIS - Wayne Township officials said an argument between two students led to the arrest and possible expulsion of one of them after a loaded firearm was found in his backpack.
Metropolitan School District (MSD) of Wayne Township Director of Communications Mary Lang said during a Wednesday-morning passing period at Ben Davis High School, two students had a loud argument in the hallway.
Lang said three school officials responded immediately, and by the time they got to the students, a teacher had already separated them.
Both students were taken to the dean's office and when they arrived, administrators said they found a handgun in the backpack of one of the students.
Investigators later confirmed to RTV6 that the gun was loaded.
Both students removed and the student who was carrying the gun was arrested, and will reportedly be recommended for expulsion.
Lang said the incident did not disrupt the school day at the high school, and that the final exam schedule that's been set will stand.
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department records showed that since last December, police have responded to more than 119 incidents at Ben Davis.
Administrators sent home a letter to parents Wednesday afternoon to remind them to talk to their kids about always reporting suspicious activity to an adult in order to keep the school safe. The superintendent also sent a phone message to parents to let them know about the incident.
