INDIANAPOLIS - An SUV hit a bicyclist and put the victim in critical condition Monday evening on the city’s west side, police said.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) said at roughly 8:20 p.m., officers were sent to the 4700 block of Georgetown Road to respond to a bicyclist with a serious bodily injury.
Investigators said a man was driving an SUV south on Georgetown Road, approaching 47th Street, when he hit a bicyclist, whom the man claimed to have not seen.
IMPD said the bicyclist was crossing 47th Street from east to west when the crash happened.
The man on the bike, yet unidentified, was suffering from severe trauma and was transported to IU Health Methodist Hospital in critical condition, IMPD said.
Officers said the man driving the SUV remained on the scene until emergency crews arrived, and is cooperating with investigators. IMPD said alcohol does not appear to have been a factor but a standard blood test is being run.
IMPD said the investigation will be passed along to the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office to determine whether any criminal charges will be filed.
