STEVENSVILLE, Mich. -- A black bear that wandered through northern Indiana and southern Michigan last year has been captured and euthanized.

ABC57 in South Bend reported the bear – the first to be seen in Indiana in more than 140 years – was trapped in Stevensville, Michigan.

The black bear was first confirmed to have entered Indiana in St. Joseph County in June 2015. Afterward, it continued to travel around the Indiana-Michigan state line.

In July, DNR officials announced a plan to trap and relocate the bear.

According to ABC57, the Indiana Department of Natural resources said this week the bear had become a threat to public safety.
