Blown transformer leads to significant power outage affecting Lawrence

MARION COUNTY, Ind. - Traffic lights and area power were affected Wednesday morning when an issue arose with a transformer in a city on the northeast side of Marion County.

Just before 6:30 a.m., city officials said the traffic lights were out at the intersection of Pendleton Pike and Sunnyside Road in Lawrence.

UPDATE at 8 a.m.: Officials said the traffic lights were operating normally again.

"This is a major commuter thoroughfare on the northeast side of the city," Lawrence Police Department spokesman Gary Woodruff said. "The likely cause is a blown transformer."

Woodruff said repair crews were headed to the transformer to restore power. Meanwhile, businesses in the area were also affected. Woodruff said police and fire crews were monitoring the area to ensure public safety.

Indianapolis Power & Light was reporting nearly zero residents without power by 8, down from 1,000 at 6:30 a.m. Find current outage information here.
