Life-saving efforts were underway at Butler University Tuesday in honor of a former Bulldog basketball star waging his own fight against cancer.

Blood and bone marrow drives were being held in honor of former Butler basketball player Andrew Smith, who is undergoing chemotherapy after a resurgence of cancer.

Smith said while he already found a bone marrow match, he wanted to participate in the drives to help others.

Currently, there are 12 million people on the national bone marrow registry.
