BOONE COUNTY, Ind. -- An Indiana State Police trooper was injured in a crash Wednesday morning on I-865 in Boone County, Indiana.

The crash happened in the eastbound lanes of I-865, approaching I-465 around 9 a.m.

The trooper, 5-year ISP veteran Ronneal Williams, was performing a traffic stop on the passenger side of a van when a separate vehicle left the road and crashed into the trooper's car.

Williams' car crashed into the van, which hit Williams. He was thrown into the air and over the guardrail. He was alert and conscious enough to radio in the crash, saying that he needed help.

"He was just out here working hard, like he does every day, trying to keep everybody safe" ISP spokesperson Sgt. John Perrine said.

He was taken to St. Vincent's Hospital in very serious condition, Perrine said.

"When you see an emergency vehicle -- we're not just talking a police officer," Perrine said. "Today a police officer was struck. There are a lot of emergency crews that work alongside the road. We want everybody to stay safe."
