INDIANAPOLIS - IMPD said it was an accident when a 5 year old was shot in the back Friday night.
Officers arrived at a report of someone shot on the 9100 block of East 42nd Street to find a 5 year old suffering from a gunshot wound to the back.
The child was immediately transported to Riley Hospital for Children in good condition.
Detectives believe the gunshot that wounded the child is from a stray bullet from a separate incident.
Detectives from IMPD’s Aggravated Assault Unit are following up on several leads and IMPD said investigators have identified a person of interest. They have also confiscated the firearm involved in the shooting.
IMPD said Saturday that detectives will now review evidence and known facts with the Marion County Prosecutor's Office in the very near future to determine if any charges will be filed.
