Brief standoff leads to arrest of Shelby County suspect

COLUMBUS, Ind. - Police took a Shelby County drug suspect into custody after a short standoff Friday afternoon.

Columbus police said the action forced officers to evacuate several people from the Applegate and Charleston Square Apartments, and put Smith Elementary School (located in the 4500 block of Waycross Drive) for more than two hours.

Columbus Police Department Lt. Matt Myers said Richard Myers of Edinburgh came out after negotiators spoke with him for several minutes.

Lt. Myers said three other people inside the apartment that police responded to were questioned at the scene and not incarcerated.

Police said the lockdown at the elementary school was lifted around 1:30 p.m. Friday, and no injuries were reported.
