ALBION, Ind. - A tip from a Fort Wayne woman led to the arrests of her husband and his brother in connection to the 2011 death of a woman whose body was dumped in a northeastern Indiana lake, a prosecutor said Wednesday.
Andres Gonzalez Jr., 35, has been charged with murder in the death of 36-year-old Erin Ruth Justin. His brother, Victor Gonzalez, 32, is charged with assisting a criminal, Noble County Prosecutor Steve Clouse said at a news conference. Both men also are charged with removal of a body from a scene.
The break in the case came earlier this month after Colleen Gonzalez, the wife of Victor Gonzalez, spoke with an Indiana State Police detective. She said that at time of Justin's slaying, her husband had told her that he had helped Andres Gonzalez dump the body, weighted with a cinder block, in Bartley Lake near Albion, about 25 miles northwest of Fort Wayne.
Victor Gonzalez was arrested late on March 20 and Andres Gonzalez early the following day.
Andres Gonzalez told police he had picked up Justin and given her a ride late on June 18, 2011, and fatally attacked her in his garage in the hours afterward, court records said.
Clouse said Justin's relatives were notified Tuesday night of the arrests.
Both men were being held in the Noble County Jail in Albion. A judge on Wednesday ordered the appointment of a public defender for Andres Gonzalez, but the names of attorneys representing the men weren't available.
