BROWNSBURG, Ind. -- The Brownsburg Public Library is trying to recover information after its computers were attacked by ransomware last month.
The attack happened on June 26th.
Library Director Denise Robinson said their computers did a “windows update” which activated the ransomware.
Robinson said the library already had all of the recommended security measures in place, but the attack was so sophisticated that it took out the library’s backup system as well.
“Thankfully it did not spread,” said Robinson. “No desktops attacked. Nothing else was damaged beyond that.”
Robinson says library customers shouldn’t worry about their personal information because they do not hold credit card or social security numbers on the computers or systems that were attacked.
The library paid to receive the code to unlock the system, but Robinson said they are still trying to recover some of the lost information.
The library is also adding more security measures so if it ever happens again, they are ready.
