INDIANAPOLIS -- A woman faces a preliminary charge of criminal recklessness after police say she drove a car into a restaurant on Indy's south side Friday morning.

Police say Deana Shumaker, 41, intentionally drove an SUV into the front of Greiner's SubShop near the intersection of Shelby and Raymond streets.

One witness told police Shumaker was sitting in her SUV at a gas station across the street from the restaurant. She was arrested without incident.

A employee of the SubShop was trapped under the debris. Tina Scruggs was taken to Eskenazi Health in critical condition.

The owner of the shop said Scruggs worked there for over 30 years.

"I had already heard a rumor that somebody had gone through a building. You just never imagine it's going to be yours," owner Lisa Moyer said. "To find somebody who is so faithful to a job for 31 years is rare."

Police say they don't believe Shumaker knew there was anyone inside the restaurant nor do they believe Scruggs was targeted in the incident.

They don't know exactly what caused Shumaker to drive her vehicle into the business, but investigators say she was going through some type of mental episode that led her to believe something was going on inside the sub shop, so she thought she needed to drive into it to protect people.
