CARMEL, Ind. - A motorcycle driver died Sunday morning after a Carmel police officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop, police said.

Officials said the officer attempted to stop the motorcycle driver traveling east on 116th Street just before 1 a.m.

The driver accelerated to a high rate of speed before crashing near the intersection of 116th Street and River Road, police said.

An accident investigation team with the Carmel Police Department was called to the scene to assist.

Police said the motorcycle operator, 23-year-old Travis Goddard, of Fishers, was pronounced dead on the scene by Carmel Fire Department medics.

Officials said the crash is still under investigation.
