INDIANAPOLIS -- The 1,400 Carrier workers who are losing their jobs will be able to get a little help.
The workers will be eligible for Trade Adjustment Assistance, Sen. Joe Donnelly (D-Ind.) announced Wednesday.
The Trade Adjustment Assistance program is designed for people in the exact situation the Carrier workers are in: It helps workers who lost their jobs because of foreign trade.
In February, Carrier announced it would be ending Indianapolis operations and moving 1,400 jobs to Monterrey, Mexico.

The program helps the workers by offering resources, skills and support to find new jobs.
In 2015, $711 million was allocated to the program. The program was reauthorized in 2015. Donnellyand Sen. Dan Coats (R-Ind.) both supported the program.

"This is welcome news for the hard-working Hoosiers forced to find new jobs because Carrier decided to ship their jobs to Mexico," Donnelly said. "With Trade Adjustment Assistance, these workers, losing their jobs through no fault of their own, will have access to the resources and training they may need to find new opportunities."
To be eligible for the Trade Adjustment Assistance program, the workers (or someone on their behalf) must apply to the United States Department of Labor, saying that the foreign trade "contributed importantly' to the job loss.
