INDIANAPOLIS -- Hearts were heavy Wednesday at Butler University.

The Butler flag flew half-staff as a tribute to former standout basketball player, Andrew Smith.

Smith died Tuesday at the age of 25 after a two year battle with cancer.

Wednesday, Butler students remembered Smith, who was an Academic All-American.

"It shows a ton of respect. Like, he's a hell of a player, a hell of a kid, cancer is awful," Butler student Evan Paige said.

"Everyone has been down. It's a hot topic. He was a good student and a great dude," Austin Sypolt added.

Smith battled lymphoma, which turned into leukemia.

His wife, Samantha, announced he passed away as she held him in her arms.

A service for Smith will be held at Traders Point Christian Church in Whitestown Sunday at 5:00 p.m. Doors open at 4:00 p.m. His wife says all are welcome.

This weekend, the Butler Men's Basketball team will debut jerseys with a patch to honor Smith.
