DELAWARE COUNTY, Ind. - A teenage driver who police said caused a fatal crash Thursday may have been distracted by cereal.

The crash happened just before 8:30 a.m. near the intersection of North Wheeling Avenue and Delaware County Road 450 North, the Star Press reported.

Police said a 17-year-old Delta High School student driving an SUV was northbound on Wheeling when she drove off the side of the road, over-corrected and nearly hit another vehicle before over-correcting again, spinning and striking a Mini Cooper.

The driver of the car, Jamey Brantley, 38, Kokomo, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 17-year-old told a witness that she had just passed a slower car and had looked down to change the radio station when the crash happened.

Police initially blamed wet road conditions in the crash, but investigators said they also found spilled cereal in the SUV.

There was also evidence of a synthetic drug, but police said they do not believe it was a factor in the crash.
The 17-year-old suffered minor injuries.
