TIPTON, Ind. - Chrysler Group says it is considering a sprawling, unfinished factory in Tipton for a plant with perhaps 850 workers.

Tipton County officials on Monday approved a property tax abatement request from Chrysler for the factory site along U.S. 31 near the city of Tipton.

Chrysler spokeswoman Jodi Tinson says the company is considering a $162 million investment in the project. She says Chrysler appreciates the support of Tipton County officials, but that several more steps must be completed before the company can confirm its plans.

Linda Williamson, Tipton's interim director for economic development, said the community is ready for Chrysler.

"The community is very excited to have the opportunity for more than 800 jobs, and we're excited that it's a world-class company," Williamson said.

The site about 35 miles north of Indianapolis originally had been planned as a 1,400-worker factory that would make transmissions for Chrysler until German auto parts maker Getrag stopped construction in 2008.

Chrysler has thousands of employees at four factories in nearby Kokomo.
