City-county leader Beurt SerVaas dead at 94

INDIANAPOLIS - Indianapolis business and political leader Dr. Beurt R. SerVaas died Sunday, his publishing company confirmed.

SerVaas, 94, was an Indianapolis native and graduate of Shortridge High School.

According to his biography posted on the Indianapolis Public Schools website, SerVaas served more than 40 years on the City-County Council, including 27 years as council president.

SerVaas was also one of the creators of Unigov, which consolidated Indianapolis and Marion County governments in 1970.
