INDIANAPOLIS -- The city of Indianapolis will receive a $355,000 federal grant to help 1,400 Carrier workers who will lose their jobs beginning in 2017.
Rep. Andre Carson said the U.S. Department of Commerce's Economic Development Administration is behind the grant to assist Carrier workers.
Carrier executives announced in February they would be closing an Indianapolis plant and moving the jobs to Monterrey, Mexico. Video of the announcement to a large group of Carrier workers went viral, prompting outrage from Hoosiers.
The relocation process will take place over a 3-year period, according to the company.
The city says the money will be used in part to hire a support coordinator for Carrier's employees.
This is the latest move by thecity and federal government to assist the displaced workers. A task force with job placement help, financial guidance and other assistance was set up by the city in April.

Sen. Joe Donnelly sent a letter of support to the Department of Commerce in support of the grant application:
"This federal grant will help hard-working Hoosiers find new employment opportunities, including those harmed by Carrier's decision to ship Hoosier jobs to Mexico. I was proud to support this effort to bring important, much-needed resources to Hoosier workers and attract new businesses to Indianapolis, helping local families and our community."
