Former classmates of Akram Musleh say they were shocked by his arrest on charges of attempting to aid the Islamic State terrorist group.

The 18-year-old spent the last two years at Brownsburg's Harris Academy – a branch of Brownsburg High School that offers a different learning environment. He came to the program after two years at Brownsburg High School.

Classmates who knew Musleh described him as outgoing and a frequent joker.

"Very social … he laughed a lot," said classmate Davor Kajasa. "Everyone is saying he turned on everyone and that he's a bad kid, but he's really not. He was a really good kid. He was just going through a hard time."

Kajasa said he hadn't talked to Musleh lately, as the two had drifted apart when they went to separate schools.

The Brownsburg Schools administration declined to comment on Musleh's time in the district.
