Colonial Hills bus crash investigation moves forward from ISP to IMPD

IMPD: Results of investigation released next week

INDIANAPOLIS - The investigation into the cause of a deadly church bus crash continues to move forward, officials said.

Indiana State Police completed their part of the investigation and turned the report over to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department crash investigators on Monday.

IMPD said Wednesday it will be at least a week until the results of their investigation are released.

A final report on the July 27 Keystone Avenue crash, which claimed three lives and injured 33 others, could take up to six months.

After the investigation is complete, the results will be made available to the Marion County Prosecutor's Office to decide if any charges are appropriate.

Colonial Hills Baptist Church members Chad and Courtney Phelps, and Tonya Weindorf were killed when the bus returning from a summer camp in Michigan overturned coming off I-465.

Witnesses said the bus was speeding as it came off the highway.

The driver, 68-year-old Dennis Mauer, said the brakes on the bus failed. Mauer is also a member of the church.

Sources told the Call 6 Investigators that an initial review of the charter bus shows that its brake system was working.

Church leaders defended their bus' maintenance record hours after the crash.
