COLUMBUS, Ind. - A Bartholomew County man who pleaded guilty but mentally ill to slashing his female roommate’s throat was sentenced to 60 years Thursday.
Ryan Klug admitted he killed 26-year-old Adaobi Obih last November in their Columbus apartment.
Klug fled to Texas and Obih's body was found two days later.
Klug told a psychiatrist he was obeying a television message to kill her. The prosecutor said he will receive psychiatric treatment in prison.
Klug's defense attorney, David Nowak, said Klug previously underwent mental health treatment in Michigan after a choking attack on his brother.
Klug decided to make the guilty but mentally ill plea because he wanted to spare Obih's family and his family from having to go through a trial, Nowak told The Associated Press.
