INDIANAPOLIS -- A bill is headed to Gov. Mike Pence's desk that could mean major changes for kids playing sports in Indiana.

Senate Bill 234 expands requirements for concussion training. The bill makes it mandatory for coaches and assistant coaches from 5th – 12th grade to complete a certified player safety education course.

Mike Duerson is one of the bill's supporters. His brother Dave Duerson was an Indiana native and former NFL player who suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). Dave Duerson took his own life in 2011.

"I'd like to think that the work we are doing in his honor he would be proud of," Mike Duerson said. "As I said before, he gave his life and that last moment he remembered his brothers in the NFL."

Duerson lives with the effects of concussions he received while playing basketball at IUPUI. He says his life now is focused largely on making sports at all levels safer for athletes.
