INDIANAPOLIS -- Could Gov. Mike Pence be a presidential contender at a contested Republican National Convention?
It's not as far-fetched as it might sound, according to ABC News Political Director Rick Klein.
Klein says he's heard Pence's name associated with the convention – and that might be why the governor will steer clear of endorsing a candidate.

"I'd be surprised at this level," Klein said. "I think the best you could have is at a strategic level, but it seems to me Governor Pence has stayed out of this to a pretty steady degree. He's even a name I've heard associated with a potential contested convention, someone who could come in late in the process and I think getting into electoral politics this late could hurt that... That said, I think Governor Pence is a respected political leader, and if he sees an opportunity to push the right button at the right time, I have no doubt he'll take it."
Pence has met with all three remaining Republican candidates in the past week, but doesn't have anything in the near future on his schedule suggesting an upcoming endorsement announcement.
As for what could happen at a contested convention, Klein says it's anyone's guess.
