INDIANAPOLIS – One year after a devastating crash in Shelby County, three teens got the chance to thank the doctors who saved their lives at IU Health.
Patrick Brogan, Timmy Brogan and Lewis Dilts – Bishop Chatard alumni - were involved in a crash that happened on I-74, just east of Shelbyville last year. The crash injured five teens in total.
Patrick had his seatbelt on during the time of the crash and said he remembers the moments after their van flipped.
“I had to unbuckle myself and crawl out the front window. Lewis was just screaming. Timmy and Luca were unconscious. I remember trying to wake them up, and then having no response," said Patrick.
Timmy, Patrick’s twin brother, was hanging upside down and unconscious. He suffered extensive brain damage and has undergone treatment at IU Health.
“How am I going to thank these people for everything they have done for me,” said Timmy.
Both surgeons who helped save the teens said they are thankful for their recoveries.
“A lot of patients with these types of injuries do not have as good as a recovery as these guys did, so it is truly amazing to see them here today and thriving and doing well,” said Dr. Jennifer Hartwell.
The teens and doctors stressed the importance of wearing seatbelts as that is what prevented a deadly crash.
“I almost never recognize our patients when they come back to see me because they look so different from the last time I saw them, and gosh it is amazing,” said Dr. Stephanie Savage.
