MARION COUNTY, Ind. - A south-side fire trapped people inside a home as crews battled to help them escape Monday evening. Officials confirmed at least one person died, and two dogs were lost in the blaze, as well.
Officials said they were called to the fire at roughly 9 p.m. in the 6700 block of Orinoco Avenue, which is just a couple blocks east of Southport High School.
Indianapolis fire officials said a mother, 53, and her two daughters, 35 and 22, were in the home at the time of the fire. Investigators said the mom and the 22-year-old were injured via smoke inhalation when they tried to rescue the 35-year-old from the fire, who was trapped inside. The 35-year-old daughter was wheelchair-bound, authorities said.
The 22-year-old daughter was sent to Eskenazi Hospital's burn unit in serious condition, but the mother refused to be taken to the hospital while her other daughter was still inside the burning home, officials said.
The 35-year-old woman died in the fire, along with two dogs.
The victims of the fire have not yet been identified.
