Crews battle two-alarm fire on city's south side

Investigators looking into possibility of arson

INDIANAPOLIS - Crews responded to a two-alarm fire on the city’s south side Monday evening.

The fire was reported at an abandoned hotel, formerly a Ramada Inn, on Thompson Road and East Street, just south of the Interstate 465 interchange, around 8:15 p.m.

Officials with the Indianapolis Fire Department said gaining access into the building was a problem for firefighters.

Crews responding to the fire noticed multiple cases of vandalism and ordered an additional search to clear the building in case anyone else was inside without permission, officials said. The damage caused by vandalism appeared to include the removal of metals and other materials and graffiti, authorities said.

Investigators were looking into the possibility of arson, officials said.

Damage was estimated at $50,000, IFD officials said. No injuries were reported.
