Downtown streets closed after possible manhole explosions

No injuries reported

INDIANAPOLIS - Downtown traffic was impacted as crews investigated at least two possible manhole explosions Friday evening.

The incidents happened in the area from East Market to East Washington streets and from Pennsylvania to Alabama streets just after 8 p.m.

The impacted area was only a few blocks north of the Big Ten Tournament at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

Firefighters with the Indianapolis Fire Department said an underground transformer blew and that caused the covers to come off. Crews discovered smoke in the basement of a building at 156 East Market St.  The building was unoccupied and no injuries were reported.

Both Citizens Energy Group and Indianapolis Power & Light Company were called to the area because of the danger associated with underground power lines that could have been affected.

Market, Washington, Delaware, Alabama and Pennsylvania streets were all closed at 8:30 p.m., but all of the roads had reopened by 9:30 p.m.

Few other details were released.
