INDIANAPOLIS - One woman was critically injured during a fire at a nursing home on the city’s south side Tuesday evening.
The fire was reported at Bethany Village Extended Care Facility on South Shelby Street and East Sumner Avenue around 8 p.m.
Officials with the Indianapolis Fire Department said an 82-year-old woman was taken to Eskenazi Health in critical condition after she went into cardiac arrest.
IFD said a fire broke out in the woman’s room. The smoke alarm went off and staff members found thick smoke and fire when they entered her room.
Staff members carried the woman out of the room and that is when she went into cardiac arrest, officials said.
A staff nurse started CPR until firefighters arrived and assumed CPR duties.
Fifteen other patients in the nursing home were evacuated to another wing of the building, officials said.
Few other details were released.
