Dad on life support, toddler injured in Carmel house fire

Authorities release conflicting information

CARMEL, Ind. - A father and his toddler son were injured in a Carmel house fire Thursday morning.

Officials said the fire was reported at 6:30 a.m. in the 900 block of Auman Drive East.

Carmel authorities said later Thursday afternoon that James Shiel, 26, died of his injuries. His 2-year-old son was being treated  for injuries at Riley Hospital for Children.

Two hours later, Carmel authorities released the following statement:

"The Carmel Fire Department received conflicting information from the Marion County Coroner’s Office that led to a report of the death of fire victim James Shiel. Mr. Shiel is on life support at this time, according to family. The City of Carmel apologizes to the family for any hardship this may have caused. We will keep you posted as we receive more information."

Fire investigators believe pinched electrical wires behind a desk may have caused the fire to ignite the curtains and spread through the house.

A neighbor who was leaving for work noticed the fire coming from the front of the house.

Firefighters with the Carmel Fire Department arrived and searched the house for victims. The two victims were found in the kitchen and taken to Indiana University North Hospital before they were transferred to Indianapolis hospitals.

Officials said there were no smoke detectors in the house.
